national-heart-health-month

February is Heart Health Month, a designation first made by President Lyndon B. Johnson approved December 30, 1963. President Johnson declared February 1964 as American Heart Month urging the people of the United States to “give heed to the nationwide problem of heart and blood-vessel diseases, and to support the programs required to bring about its solution.” a

Along with the declaration of February as National Heart Health Month, the American Heart Association (AHA) helps lead the charge in providing awareness, education, and funding of medical research in order to promote heart health. According to the AHA, cardiovascular disease accounts for 17.3 million deaths per year and by the year 2030, it is expected to surpass 23.6 million. b

The AHA was founded in 1924 and includes over 22.5 million volunteers and supporters today. The statistics regarding heart disease can be seen as alarming; today, it is the number one killer in the world, and some form of cardiovascular disease affects more than one in every three adult Americans. c
