Becoming a CNA

How Becoming a CNA Can Help You Break into the Healthcare Field

Have you always wanted to work in the healthcare field?  Perhaps you dreamed of becoming a doctor or nurse when you were a child, but weren’t sure how to get started?  If you are interested in working in the healthcare field, but aren’t sure how to reach your goals, becoming a CNA can help you get started.  Becoming a CNA can help you break into healthcare and expose you to various aspects of the field.  Continue reading below as we discuss how becoming a CNA can help you break into the healthcare field.

It Can Introduce You to the Healthcare Field

Becoming a CNA can help you break into the healthcare field by introducing you to the field itself.  When you think about it, this is critically important.  After all, working in healthcare is not the same as watching a popular medical show on TV.  Being in the field yourself is a good way for you to determine if you like this type of work.  You can also assess whether you can see yourself working in this field long-term.  Becoming a CNA is a relatively easy process as well (compared to some other healthcare occupations). You will complete a state-approved training program, which usually takes a few weeks, and then site for the applicable certification exams.  If you pass the certification exams and meet the other necessary requirements from the state, you can become fully certified as a nurse’s aide.  Becoming a CNA could be a trial run of sorts on whether you could see yourself pursuing further advancement in the healthcare field.

You Can Develop Valuable Skills

Becoming a CNA can also help you break into the healthcare field by learning valuable and transferrable skills.  When we talk about skills here, we are going to break them down into two categories, technical skills, and soft skills.  Technical skills refer to the things you could learn to perform your CNA duties.  This includes taking and recording vital signs, how to properly position patients (turning, assisting them get into bed, and move from the bed to a wheelchair, etc.), and how to maintain a safe environment for patients.  Soft skills refer to the skills we use to interact with others effectively.  Soft skills a CNA can learn and develop include communication skills, compassion, and empathy.  All these skills are important and can be transferrable if someone chooses to further their career in healthcare down the road.

You Can be Exposed to and Learn About Other Healthcare Professions

Finally, becoming a CNA can help you by exposing you to other professions in healthcare and providing you with an opportunity to learn about those roles.  For example, it’s not uncommon for CNAs to work with nurses (both LPNs and RNs).  By becoming a CNA, you could have better exposure into what nurses do daily.  In addition, depending upon where you work as a CNA, you may interact with other healthcare professionals as well.  This can allow you to evaluate several different paths within healthcare, should you choose to stay in this field and pursue advancement in the future.
