What is an EKG Technician?

An EKG Technician is a healthcare professional who prepares patients for, and administers a test called an Electrocardiogram.  As part of their duties, an EKG Technician may also evaluate the initial test results to ensure they obtained the information the physician will need in order to interpret and evaluate the results.


What does a EKG Technician do?

An EKG Technician may perform a variety of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Prepare patients for EKG tests
  • Explain the procedure to patients in advance
  • Administer EKGs
  • Prepare, maintain, and sterilize equipment and machinery as needed
  • Provide any necessary post-test care or support to patients

Where does a EKG Technician work?

EKG Technicians may be found working in several different types of healthcare facilities.  These include hospitals, outpatient medical services/testing centers, diagnostic labs/facilities, and physicians’ offices.

How to become a EKG Technician?

The process to become an EKG Technician usually involves obtaining post-secondary training.  In addition, while it may not be required in every instance, many employers prefer EKG Technicians who have obtained certification after their formalized training.


How long does it take to become a EKG Technician?

The time that it takes to become an EKG Technician may vary based on a few factors.  Among these include the length of the training program you select and the time it takes you to obtain certification.


How long is EKG Technician training?

EKG Technician training programs may vary in length based on the school and what is covered in the program.  These types of programs could last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months, to even longer.  It’s important as you’re researching training programs and schools to evaluate the curriculum for the program to ensure it covers the necessary knowledge and skills you should have in order to pursue your new career.

Is this program hands-on?

Yes.  In addition to traditional classroom instruction, students in the EKG Technician program will have an opportunity to apply the knowledge and practice the skills they are learning in a hands-on environment.  The EKG Technician program at Training Direct includes EKG Clinical Lab practice as well as CPR lab practice.


Does this program offer an externship or internship?

An externship/internship is not included in the EKG Technician program.  Training Direct does offer career services assistance to all program completers, however, job placement is not guaranteed by Training Direct.


How long is this program?

The EKG Technician program at Training Direct can be completed in just a matter of weeks, however, actual completion time will vary based on the specific schedule selected by the student.

Does your program include a certification?

While actual certification is not included in the EKG Technician program, graduates of this program may go on to challenge a certification exam.  Additional fees for certification exams may apply and are the responsibility of the student.  Certification exams may require candidates to meet additional criteria as well (such as having a high school diploma or GED), and it is the responsibility of students to ensure they meet these requirements as well.
